Perhaps no aspect of Catholic piety is as comforting to parents as the belief that an angel protects their little ones from dangers real and imagined. Yet guardian angels are not only for children. Their role is to represent individuals before God, to watch over them always, to aid their prayer, and to present their souls to God at death.
The concept of an angel assigned to guide and nurture each human being is a development of Catholic doctrine and piety based on Scripture but not directly drawn from it. Jesus’ words in Matthew 18:10 best support the belief: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”
Devotion to the angels began to develop with the birth of the monastic tradition. Saint Benedict gave it impetus and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the great 12th-century reformer, was such an eloquent spokesman for the guardian angels that angelic devotion assumed its current form in his day.
A feast in honour of the guardian angels was first observed in the 16th century. In 1615, Pope Paul V added it to the Roman calendar.

The Guardian Angel prayer
The Holy Guardian Angels are the special angels assigned to humans by God, to watch over all mankind and over individual human beings from grave danger from birth until death.
St. Thomas Aquinas says that Angels are Spiritual Creatures who unceasingly glorify God and who work together to serve God’s saving plans for mankind. Besides each person who believes in God, stands an angel who acts as a guard, guide, protector and shepherd helping him to live according to God’s Holy will.
The angels most often protect us from physical danger and also from committing sin. St John Bosco inspired us by stating that whenever we find ourselves on the verge of committing sin, we should invoke the help of our guardian angels who are always ready to help us. He also says, “Ignore the devil and fear him not, for he trembles and flees at the sight of your guardian angel.”
The angels also come to our aid at the time of our death. St Alphonsus Liguori tells us that, “The powers of hell will launch an attack on the dying Christian; but his guardian angel together with St Michael, our defender, and patron saints will come to his rescue and make their last combat with the devils.”
